Anyone interested in more on the subject should have a read of this exceptional piece on GPU v ASIC cyrptocurrency mining from the Sia Dev Team https://blog.sia.tech/the-state-of-cryptocurrency-mining-538004a37f9b

Things move fast in the crypto space, so after reading just had to let your audience know of the latest update on Equihash POW. Just in the last few weeks we’ve seen a lot happen in GPU mining, ASIC-product-launches & ASIC-resistance. Bitmain unveiled their Equihash ASIC to the public, validating rumours and thus indicating that Equihash-ASICs have been mining various blockchains for quite some time now. USD$1999 (ship 20-30 june) and it does 10,000 Sol (10ks/s), that’s the equivalent of 15 x 1080tis using less than a tenth of the power. Bitmain has been known to secretly mine with secret unpublicized ASICs before announcing their existence, presale price and long before shipping. GPUs are far less risky and help keep things decentralized. The general public still wont have their hands on them til June 20-30, which makes them a potentially risky investment.

When it happened to the ‘proper’ privacy coins, the leaders showed their ‘no compromise’ status, many Cryptonight POW coins hardforked last month to render those ASICS unusable. This separated the classes into lame and “game on”, with Sumokoin and Monero earning their stripes, showcasing the utmost competency in blockchain/mining tech, holding strong in the fight against centralized ASIC POW advantages that lead to power and wealth centralization. Based on network hashrates it’s estimated Bitmain’s secret Cryptonight ASICs were mining 50% of Monero’s hashrate before the hard fork.
